A post that could have easily found a home within the 'Las Vegas Local' section, Mount Charleston is a picturesque, mountain getaway just one hour from The Strip. Set within the Springs Mountain National Recreation Area, Mt. Charleston is surround by scenic hiking trails, picnic areas nestled deep in the coniferous forest, a newly developed ski resort, disc golf, gondola lifts and more. If that doesn't inspire a trip away from The Strip, how does an average summer temperature high of 75 degrees sound?
51 miles of trails span the Mount Charleston areas with trails for both the novice and expert hiker alike. A wide disparity in trail difficulties is coupled with a wide disparity in hike completion times with trails taking anywhere from 20-minutes to 14-hours one-way. A couple novice hikes we'd recommend would be the Sawmill Loop and Echo Falls trail and a few advanced trails we'd recommend would be Fletcher Canyon, Mummy Springs and Cathedral Rock. The novice hikes and some intermediate hikes are dog-friendly and there's plenty of parking at each trail head. We had no cellular service on the mountain so make sure to have a map of some sort to keep your bearings (Maps are available at The Resort on Mount Charleston general store). Always be aware of your surroundings, stay safe and enjoy the crisp climate on a mountain trail!
While hiking is geared for Spring, Summer and Fall, Lee Canyon Winter Resort is your newly developed outlet for skiing and snowboarding! With 3 lifts servicing 30 snow trails, the 445 acre Lee Canyon is soon to be a popular destination for Las Vegas tourists visiting during the winter holidays. As new residents to the Vegas area, we've yet to experience this winter wonderland, but what we can say is Lee Canyon is a full service ski resort with all the amenities of other popular ski resorts and was widely reviewed as a premier destination. We've already purchased our 2017-2018 winter season passes so be on the lookout for an early season update on everything the ski resort has to offer!
